Sarah Marie Smith (nee McDuffee) was born in New York in the year 1826. She was married to J. H. Smith Sept. 13, 1848. To this union were born five children, namely, Mrs. Eliza Sherwood, D. B. Smith and Mrs. Kate Forseman, all of Bennett, William, who died Jan. 4, 1886 and Demis Ann, having died at the age of seventeen years.

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Smith moved to Bennett in 1882, locating on a farm two and one-half miles northeast of Bennett. In 1885 they moved to the town of Bennett, where they were in the hotel business for over five years.

J. H. Smith passed out of this life December 1st, 1891.

"Grandma" Smith was always a kind and loving mother. In her early twenties she joined the Christian church. She never was much care to her children until about the last year, when old age and sickness combined forced her people to keep constant watch over her.

She died Thursday afternoon, September 8th, at the home of her daughter, Eliza Sherwood, at the age of 84 years and 14 days.

Funeral was held Sunday forenoon with services at the Sherwood residence and interment was made in York Prairie cemetery. She leaves to mourn her death besides two daughters and one son, fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

'Tis hard to break the tender cord!
When love has bound the heart,
'Tis hard, so hard, to speak the words
Must we forever part?
Dearest loved one we have laid thee
In the peaceful grave's embrace
But thy memory will be cherished
Till we see they heavenly face.
