13 August 1909 - The Lowden News

W. F. Rice, a former citizen of Lowden, died recently at his home in Long Beach, Cal. Mr. Rice kept a harness shop, while at Lowden, which business he sold out to John Horstmann, and moved from here to Lexington, Neb., about twenty-seven years ago. His first wife having died quite a while before that. Some time after Mr. Rice had been at Lexington he was married to Miss Kate Whitney of Lowden, his now sorrowing widow. They were married at Mount Vernon, Iowa, by Rev. A. K. Baird. The following newspaper clipping was handed to us:
"Banker dies after lingering illness."
"W. F. Rice, vice president of the State Bank and a prominent citizen of Long Beach, died Sunday evening at his home, Cedar avenue and Second street, from pleuro pneumonia and rheumatism of the heart. Mr. Rice was sixty-eight years old and a native of West Virginia. Mr. Rice has been connected with the State bank since its organization. A widow survives him. Before coming to Long Beach he resided in Lexington, Nebr., where he was engaged in the harness business. The funeral was held this afternoon at three o'clock at the Rice residence under the direction of the Masonic order. Burial was made at Sunnyside."
