4 September 1908 - The Lowden News

Saturday evening while Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Richmann, who are renters on the Blazer farm, and reside one-half mile west of Lowden, and Chas. Thede, who works for them, were busy milking and doing chores, little Hertha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richmann, in playing about, fell in the water tank, and was drowned. The little one had been out of the sight of her parents and Mr. Thede, but a few minutes, during which she got to the tank and fell in. When she was missed, a quick search instituted, located her body in the tank, which contained only about one foot of water. Death appears to have ensued instantaneously when she fell into the cold water, as although, quickly discovered, all efforts for resuscitation proved futile, including the efforts of a physician, who had been summoned per phone from Lowden. It is supposed that the little one wanted to wash her hands, and the water being low, in reaching, tumbled in.

Hertha Amalia Catherine Richmann was born near Lowden, on June 12th, 1906, she died on August 29th, at the age of two years, two months and seventeen days. Her sorrowing parents, a baby sister, four grandparents and many other near relatives survive to mourn her early demise.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon with services in the Evangelical church, and interment in the Lowden cemetery, Rev. Werning officiated. There were a great many relatives, friends and neighbors in attendance at these sad and solemn services; all were appalled at such sudden visitation of the Angel of Death. The quick exchange of happy sounds of merry laughter and play of innocent childhood, into sad and solemn refrains of a funeral dirge, powerfully effects every person who stops even for but a moment to lend it thought. Consolation however ought to be derived, as the minister said, by knowing that sweet little "innocence" has safely landed in heaven without first suffering sickness or pain. Hertha is among those which drew from the Saviors lips the blessed words, "of such is the Kingdom of Heaven".
