28 May 1909 - The Lowden News

From last week's Ocheyedan Press

Mrs. Catharina Mueller was born on February 23rd, 1836, and she died on May 17th, 1909, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Doris Ostermann, near Ocheyeden, Iowa, at the age of 73 years, 2 months and 24 days of stomach trouble, her long standing ailment. Having gradually grown weaker a blood vessel rupture in the stomach made short work of her trouble, bringing the end rather sudden. During several days immediately preceding her death, she apparently had felt better. As the notice of her death flashed over the wires Monday to the distant homes of her children, it came as a sad surprise to all.

Four sons, three daughter, thirty-one grandchildren and one great grandchild survive to mourn the demise of their loved one.

Deceased was married to Ernst Heinrich Mueller in 1858. The good, kind and loving husband and father died thirty-five years ago, leaving his widow alone with her children, most of whom were then of but tender age. By careful saving and hard work she managed to raise her large family, putting her children to work as they got old enough, and the family got along remarkably well. Under the mother's guiding hand and motherly, tender care, her children all learned to take care of themselves. Two of her sons having gone to America, Mrs. Mueller followed with her other children twenty-seven years ago, and settled at Lowden, Cedar county, Iowa. Ten years ago she came to reside with her children in northwestern Iowa. Most of these past ten yeas she spent, however, at the home of her widowed daughter, Mrs. Doris Ostermann, and children, staying from time to time for shorter periods with either of her other children.

Mother Mueller was a quiet and loving Christian woman. Kindness that she could distribute, and helping the sick and needy in the neighborhood, where she resided, were among her happiest occupations. At least, while she was not as yet too much enfeebled by sickness and old age, there was none more willing to help a neighbor's family in sickness and trouble than was Mother Mueller. Her loving and kind words and acts were but reflects of her good and beautiful soul. Her many, many friends will bear us testimony that this testimonial is not overdrawn. Nay! We could not say too much.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon with service in the Lutheran church in Horton township, 3 1/2 miles south of Mrs. Ostermann's home. Rev. W. Langelett officiating. And they laid Mother Mueller to rest in the cemetery near the said Lutheran church. "Friede Ihrer Asche."

Among the relatives and friends, who were here from the distance at the funeral were: C. H. Hansen and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Mueller of Lowden, Iowa; Henry H. Mueller and daughter, Miss Emma, and Chris Mueller of Maurice, Iowa; Mrs. George Ingman of Des Moines and Bruce Lendt of Ireton, Iowa. Two of her children, namely, Wm. Mueller of Vesper, Kansas, and Mrs. Bruno Lendt, of Ireton, Iowa, had not been able to make it possible to attend the funeral.
