16 December 1948 - The Tipton Advertiser

Death summoned a prominent Cedar county businessman Saturday when Mr. S. R. Johnson passed away at his home after an illness of several months. He had been a farm operator, building contractor, and active in church and other civic enterprises of the South Bethel community for many years, and had a wide circle of friends who are now grieved at his departure.

Samuel Rice Johnston, youngest son of Gilbert and Catherine Rice Johnston, was born May 19, 1867, and passed away at his home near South Bethel, December 11, 1948, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 22 days. He was born in the South Bethel community and lived on the same section of land all of his life.

On February 19, 1890, he married Miss Maude Latta, and they established their home a short distance from the parental Johnston home. Here were born to them the following children: Ethel, Ralph, Nina, Gladys, Joseph, Catherine, Samuel Paul, Margaret, Donald and Clark. The home thus established was a happy one, both partners contributing equally to building a happy marriage and home life, which their children will always cherish in their fondest memories.

Early in life he joined the South Bethel church, to which he gave liberally his support, loyalty and services. For many years he was the Sunday school superintendent and he could always be depended upon to help promote the church projects. His years were spent in service to God and to his loved ones, and, too, he served his community well. He was a quiet, kindly man who inspired the true respect of his neighbors and his friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and by two of his children, Ethel, then Mrs. Howard Dickinson, and the infant son, Samuel Paul.

Surviving him are the sons Ralph, Joseph and Donald, all of Tipton, and Clark, of Miami, Florida, and the daughters Nina, at home, Mrs. Harry McCroskey and Mrs. George Worsham of Tipton, and Mrs. Earl Welch, of *** N. J. Also surviving him are 26 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and 3 sisters, Mrs. T. M. Smith and Mrs. Margaret ***, other relatives and many friends.
