12 June 1908 - The Lowden News

Mrs. Henry Jess died yesterday morning, June 11th, at 4 o'clock, at their home near Yankee Street, being the place they rented of Henry Miller, located south of No. 3 schoolhouse. She had suffered since Christmas with kidney and liver trouble, and 4 weeks ago she took worse and gradually kept getting worse until death came and took her hence.

Marie Buehring was born at Stralendorf, Mecklenburg Schwerin, on Feb. 26, 1849. She was married to Henry Jess in 1878. Five children were born to this union of whom three preceded their mother to the better world. Her son, Fred Jess, and daughter, Mrs. Ernst Riedesel, and the sorrowing husband, Henry Jess, survive to mourn her demise.

Mr. and Mrs. Jess came to America in 1884, and resided ever since near Wheatland and Lowden, several years ago they bought the Cassier farm south of Lowden on which now resides her son, Fred Jess, and wife.

Funeral will be held tomorrow, June 13th, at 10 o'clock a.m. from the house with interment in the family lot on the Low-German cemetery west of Wheatland.

19 June 1908 - The Lowden News

Mrs. Henry Jess, who died on June 11th, and whose obituary we published last week, was layed to rest Saturday in the Low-German cemetery west of Wheatland.

Mother Jess was a quiet faithful woman devoted to her duties in every way. She was devoted to her home and to her children, and was especially interested in their religious education as well as other lines of activity. She was strong and able almost to the very last day. She expressed to her children her willingness and readiness to go. The funeral services were held at the home Saturday morning at 10 a.m., and were conducted in the absence of Rev. Werning by Rev. S. V. Williams of the Methodist church. A large concourse of friends gathered for the last sad rites, nearly all of whom accompanied the remains through the driving rain to the cemetery at Wheatland, thus showing the remarkable esteem in which she was held. As a wife, mother and friend, she will be especially missed, but the memory of her worthy life will long remain.
