11 September 1914 - The Lowden News

Accidental death which struck terror to every heart was that of the four months old baby of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gottschalk, which succumbed Monday morning by reason of a dose of carbolic acid given it by the mother the previous evening by mistake.

It appears that the child had been under the care of a physician for a few days previous, who left a bottle of medicine for internal use and also containing carbolic acid, properly labeled, for making a solution for external application. The tired mother, wearied by the ceaseless vigil she had maintained, by mistake gave the child a dose from the deadly acid bottle. Physicians worked with it throughout the night but were unable to save the tender life. Of course the mother is frantic with grief over her careless act. Mr. Gottschalk is employed by the C. & N.W. Railway in charge of the switch lights.--Stanwood Herald

The burial took place here Wednesday in the Lutheran cemetery.
