Mechanicsville Man Fatally Injured In Tree-Clearing Mishap

Leonard Pieper, 52, was fatally injured when he was struck by a falling tree while clearing dead trees at the John Sauer farm south of Mechanicsville.

Pieper was found beside his car, approximately 150 feet from where he had been working. When he was first examined it appeared that he had only a cut on his forehead and it was thought that he might have died of a heart attack. However, when Dr. Walter Kopsa, Cedar county medical examiner, removed Pieper's cap it was found that he had massive head injuries.

Funeral services for Pieper will be held today (Dec. 19) at the Horner funeral home in Mechanicsville with Rev. James Nelson officiating.

Pieper is survived by his wife and several brothers.
