August Theodore Frederich Benthien was born on July 7, 1873, in Gottmannsfeerde, Germany, and on July 13th of that year was baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran church of Cramon, Germany. On March 25, 1888, he became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Pokrent, Germany, through the rite of confirmation.
When a young man 18 years of age, he came to America and settled here in Cedar county, where he worked a number of years as a farmhand.
On February 21, 1896, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Hasenbank at Lowden by the Rev. F. Werning. They lived for a time near Red Oak, then south of Clarence. They bought the former Clute place where they lived until 1925, when they retired from active farm work and moved to their present home in Clarence.
In 1921 it was Mr. Benthien's good fortune to be able to return once again to visit in Germany with his aged mother, who passed to her eternal reward the next year.
Mr. Benthien suffered a stroke of paralysis on March 16 which left his left side completely paralyzed and death came to relieve him of his suffering just nine weeks later, on May 18th, at 3:30 p.m. He had attained the age of 69 years, 10 months and 11 days.
Surviving his departure are his wife, Mrs. Emma Benthien; one daughter, Pauline (Mrs. Hugo Stuhr); and one son, Walter; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; also one brother in Canada and two brothers and two sisters in Germany.
Funeral services were held from the Benthien home and St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church on Friday, May 21st, with interment in St. John's cemetery, Rev. F. J. Mittler officiating.
