22 October 1942 - The Clarence Sun
Luther B. Baker was born at Shippensburg, Pa., May 17, 1867, and died in St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, October 14th, 1942, at 3:55 a.m., aged 75 years. He had been ill for seven weeks.
On November 30th, 1880, he married Miss Annie E. McCoy at Oakville, Pa., and they became the parents of two children, L. Grier Baker of 1636 Vagedes street, Fresno, Calif., and Mrs. Lena Summy, now deceased.
Mr. and Mrs. Baker came to Clarence in the '90s, about the time so many of the people from that part of Pennsylvania found this desirable location. They prospered nicely and the children were educated in the Clarence schools. The last season that they cultivated their own farm was in the year 1920 and then they bought a home, first in Clarence and later one in Cedar Rapids.
Health, contentment and prosperity with them then gradually grew into a reverse and their enjoyment of life was blighted by the death of the daughter, the loss of a leg by Mr. Baker and the prolonged illness of Mrs. Baker. The dream of a happy and unmolested evening of life cherished in many families, did not come true with them, although it was deserved.
The Bakers were members of the Presbyterian church in Clarence and transferred membership upon moving to Cedar Rapids to Westminster Presbyterian church. Mr. Baker continued his membership in Mt. Hope lodge A.F. & A.M. in Clarence. He was also a member of the Iowa Consistory.
Surviving are his life companion and son Grier and son-in-law, Frank Summy, and children, Mrs. Doris Layton of Cedar Rapids and Warren Summy who recently enlisted in the navy and was not able to return to Cedar Rapids on Saturday.
The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at a funeral home in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed in the Cedar Memorial cemetery.
