28 January 1943 - The Clarence Sun

Mrs. Chris Brinkmann, nee Sophia Hartmann, daughter of Wm. Hartmann and wife, Sophia, nee Rattert, was born in Frilla Minden, Westphalen, Germany, on February 28, 1867. She was baptized on March 10th of that year, and on April 10th, 1881, was confirmed into the Evangelical Lutheran faith in Westphalen. Leaving her homeland seven years later she came to America in March, 1888, and here she was married to Chris Brinkmann on February 8, 1889 by the Rev. Schwartz of Zion's Evangelical church at Lowden, where they were members until shortly after the organization of St. John's church at Clarence, where they have since been members.

Mr. and Mrs. Brinkmann farmed for eleven years on a farm 7 1/4 miles south of Clarence, then in 1900 moved to a farm 6 1/4 miles southeast of Clarence where they resided until 1918, when they retired from active work and moved to the town of Clarence, where they have lived in their present home for almost 25 years.

Mrs. Brinkmann has been in failing health for a number of years and on Thursday morning she suffered a stroke. Early Monday morning at 1:30, January 25th, the Lord called her to her eternal home. She had attained the age of 75 years, 10 months and 27 days.

Mr. and Mrs. Brinkmann were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on February 8, 1939. They were the parents of three children: Charles, who died in infancy; Wilhelmina, Mrs. Charles Doermann; and Sophia, Mrs. Charles Freese; who, with the devoted husband, mourn the death of a loving wife and mother. Other survivors are 10 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and, when last heard from, one sister was still living in Germany.

Funeral services were held from the Brinkmann residence and St. John's church on Wednesday, January 27th, with the Reverend F. J. Mittler officiating. Burial was in St. John's cemetery.
