18 June 1936 - The Clarence Sun

Miss Emma Griep, an ex-service nurse, died in the Veterans' Hospital in Excelsior Springs, Mo., after a prolonged illness on Saturday, June 13, 1936. Miss Griep was born May 17, 1867, near Lowden and at the time of her death had just passed her 69th birthday.

She attended the schools in Iowa and entered nurses training in an eastern hospital. She later took post graduate work and engaged almost entirely in private nursing duty.

During the world war she entered service in September, 1918, at Camp Grant, Illinois, and served until December 14, 1918. Following her army service she returned to private duty and at various times was superintendent or chief nurse in various civilian hospitals. She finally established her home in Phoenix, Arizona.

In 1932 she entered the United States Veterans' Hospital at Fort Bayard, New Mexico, because of illness and was later transferred to the Veterans' Hospital, Muskogee, Oklahoma, and finally to the Veterans' Hospital at Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

She has one brother living, William Griep of Loveland, Colorado, who was present at the time of death; and two sisters living, Mrs. Amelia King of Anita, Iowa and Mrs. Lena Lange of Mercedes, Texas. Another brother, Fred Griep, died about two years ago in Fruitland, Idaho. A daughter of William Griep, Mrs. Robert C. Cook, Excelsior Springs, Missouri, is one of several nieces.

Private funeral services were held in the Prather Chapel at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Chaplain French officiating. The remains arrived at Clarence Monday morning and interment was in the family lot in the Clarence cemetery, Rev. Karl Fauth, pastor of Evangelical church, conducting the committal services. Victory Post No. 286 accompanied the funeral party to the cemetery, acted as pallbearers and accorded the deceased military honors.

Mrs. Amelia King and two daughters of Anita, Cass county, came to be present at the burial.

Time has almost blotted out the name of Griep from the Clarence community. Wm. Griep Sr. was a subscriber of The Sun many years and would stay a while here at the home of Mrs. Peter Lange, then go to Anita, Iowa, or to Berthoud, Colo. He passed his last years making his home as pleased him with his two daughters and son.
