25 September 1925 - The Lowden News

Carl Frederick Christian Dehne was born May 11th, 1840, at Segelhorst, county of Schaumburg, in Germany, as the youngest of three children in the family of Ernest Dehne and Rosina, nee Bartling.

In early infancy he was baptized in the christian faith. He attended the parochial school of his home village and was confirmed at the age of 14 years. Later he engaged in farm work.

At the age of 27 years he emigrated to America, and in 1867 came to Iowa. For a short time he stayed at Wheatland. There he was united in marriage with Miss Minna Hoffmann. Soon after their marriage the young couple bought an 80 acre farm near Massillon, where they made their home for abut 19 years. Three children were born to them during these years, but, all three died during a diptheria epidemic.

In 1886 his wife died. A year later he sold his farm property at Massillon and bought another farm two miles northwest of Lowden. On April 24, 1887 he was married to Miss Sophie Wiegmann. God blessed their labors with success, so that they were well provided according to their needs. Their family life was blessed with five children, of whom one died in infancy, while one son and three daughters survive.

In 1908 Mr. Dehne retired from the farm work and moved with his family into Lowden to spend the remainder of his years in well earned comfort.

Gradually the infirmities of old age began to trouble him. During the last year he became more and more an invalid. About a week before his death, symptoms of an abdominal disease became apparent. Though medical aid was summoned at once, the disease could not be checked.

With untiring care and loving devotion his faithful wife and children nursed him day and night and they spared no efforts to comfort him in his sufferings.

He bore his sufferings with christian patience and cheerful trust in God, seeking and finding consolation and hope in the precious promises of God's Word and in prayer. A few days before his departure he asked for and received the sacrement of the Lord's supper. On Tuesday, September 23, the Lord relieved him from all earthly sufferings and, as we confidentially hope, took him to the realms of eternal life. He attained the age of 85 years, 4 months and 11 days.

He was a man of sincere character; a respected citizen of our community, a devoted husband and father to his family, and for more than 50 years an active member of our Evangelical congregation. For a number of years he served as a member of the church council.

Now he has entered, as we hope, into that heavenly Zion congregation, where peace and eternal bliss will be the inheritance of those who were faithful here on earth, faithful even unto death.

The nearest family relatives who mourn over his departure are besides his widow, Mrs. Sophie Dehne; one son, Henry, three daughters, Lydia, by marriage, Mrs. Herman Conrad; Alma, by marriage, Mrs. Julius Conrad; and Frieda, by marriage Mrs. Otto Brendes; and ten grandchildren, all of Lowden.

Funeral services will be held today at Zion Evangelical church. Interment will be made in the family lot in Lowden cemetery.

The following are those who acted as pall bearers: Albert Schaefer, Louis Heuser, Conrad Rowald, Henry Brendes, Chas. Kreinbring, and Ernest Meier.
