21 December 1939 - The Clarence Sun

Heinrich Dietrich Ludwig Helmold, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Helmold, was born at Laudesbergen, Hannover, Germany, January 7, 1850. After having absolved the school and having been confirmed he found employment as a mason having learned that trade. He was united in holy wedlock with Miss Caroline Becker on November 14, 1871.

In 1878 the family consisting of father, mother and three children came to America, settling on a farm south of Lowden until 1896 when they made their home on a place southeast of Clarence.

Twelve children blessed their home in the course of the years, four preceding the father in death.

In 1909, the aged parents retired from the farm, taking up their residence in Clarence. Here they enjoyed a beautiful evening of their lives, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in good health, and even their 60th wedding anniversary.

The following years were not so pleasant, the infirmaties of old age becoming conspicious. But no one suspected that the aged father would be called away so soon.

We were all looking forward to January 7, 1940 intending to help him celebrate his 90th birthday. But last Monday he suddenly became very sick and in spite of every effort to revive him he fell asleep on Tuesday morning, having attained the age of 89 years, 11 months, and 1 days.

His death has created a vacancy in his home and in the hearts of relatives and friends, that never can be filled. "He was a good man" is the universal verdict of all who knew him. He was a devout Christian, a member of the Evangelical church, never missing a German service as long as he was able to attend.

He was a man of astounding vitality. Up to the last few years he was never ill. And in his body abounding with health he had trained a mind and soul which challenged the admiration of all who came in contact with him.

He leaves to mourn his departure his venerable wife, his eight children Mrs. Lena Syring, Louis Helmold, Mrs. Ida Conrad, Mrs. Amanda Conrad, Mrs. Augusta Bergmann, Mrs. Emma Geadelmann, Fred Helmold and Otto Helmold with their families, also the families of the late Mrs. Sophia Edler and Henry Helmold, 39 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren, a number of more distant relatives and a great number of friends.

Two of his children, in addition to Mrs. Edler and Henry Helmold, Julius and Paul Helmold also preceded their father in death.

The funeral was held this afternoon with services first at the Helmold residence and then at the Evangelical church, with Reverend K. Fauth in charge. Interment followed in the Evangelical cemetery.

In charge of flowers were Mrs. Norman Bergmann, Mrs. Raymond Doermann, Mrs. Elmer Conrad.

The pallbearers were Wilbert Helmold, Harold Helmold, Otto Edler, Wm. Geadelmann, Lawrence Conrad, Raymond Conrad.
