Tipton Advertiser 17 Feb 1927 page 4 col. 3

MOFFIT-Mary Carson Moffit was born in Ballymena county, Antrim, Ireland, April 26, 1851 and died at her home in Tipton, Iowa, February 7, 1927, aged 75 years, 9 months, and 11 days.

At the age of 16 years she came to the city of Philadelphia where she lived with her brother, Thompson Carson, until her marriage with John H. Moffit, October 3, 1879.

They lived in Philadelphia three years after their marriage. They came to Cedar county, Iowa, in 1882, settling on a farm in Fairfield township where they lived until 1900, when they moved to a farm in Red Oak township where her husband died in 1917. She continued to live there while her son James operated the farm until she came to the city of Tipton in 1924 which has been her home since.

There remain to mourn her departure and to cherish her memory five sons: Thompson C., of Tipton; William of LeClaire, Iowa; James, of Tipton; Frank H., of Stanwood, Iowa; Robert C., of Akron, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs. Ethel M. Bagley, of Los Angeles, Cal.; fourteen grandchildren, two brothers, Robert and William Carson, of Philadelphia, and other relatives and friends.

She was a life long believer in the Christian religion, and was, at the time of her death, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.

The joy of her life was in her family whom she loved with the tender affection of a wife, mother, and sister. She took delight in doing for others, proving that "it is more blessed to give than to receive."

The bereaved family has the sympathy of the community in this time of sorrow. May the God of all grace make the time of parting bright with the hope of a glad immortality where loved ones never say good bye.

If I were to take my pencil
As I sit in the dim twilight,
And draw for you a picture
What I see in my mind tonight,
It would not be of a stately angel
With a form that is full of grace
But a bent and toil worn woman
With a grave and tender face.

No rosy wings would enfold her.
Nor golden her locks and fair,
But the face of my angel of pity
Is framed in snow white hair.
Her hands are not white and tender
But withered with work and woe
By carrying other's burdens
And soothing the tears that flow.

No halo of light surrounds her
No wonderous power she hath,
Yet many and many a blessing
Is spoken about her path.
And you may portray your angels,
With faces and forms of grace,
But my gentle angel of pity
Has my mother's careworn face.

CARD OF THANKS

We wish to express in this manner our sincere appreciation for the many kindnesses of friends and neighbors in our recent bereavement; also for the beautiful floral tributes.

The Moffit Family
