White, James W. of Cumberland Dies in Atlantic (1872-1952)

James W. White of Cumberland Dies in Atlantic

Cumberland----James W. White, 79, Cumberland businessman for 59 years and father of Mrs. Charles Rhinehart of Atlantic, died at 10:15 last night in the Atlantic Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for five weeks. He had been in failing health for the past 10 years.

Mr. White was born September 2, 1872, in Jasper county, the son of John R. and Rachel White. As a boy he came with his parents to a farm seven miles south of Cumberland. At the age of 12 he moved to Atlantic where he worked at the old Atlantic foundry for eight years.

He moved to Cumberland at the age of 20 where he followed the machinist trade, and was a pioneer automobile dealer. He established the electrical systems in Grant, Cumberland, Massena and Bridgewater in 1911 and operated them until 1926 when they were sold to the Iowa Electric Company. For the past 19 years he has been active in the transfer business with his sons, Harley and Harry.

On March 3, 1895, he married Martha Bell Purdy in Atlantic. She preceded him in death on June 1, 1951. He was a member of the Cumberland Baptist Church, Odd Fellows, and WOW lodges.

Surviving are four children, Mrs. Charles Rhinehart, Mrs. Cecil Hyndman of Cumberland, Harry and Harley White of Cumberland, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. one brother, Miller White of Bulkan, Alberta, Canada, two sisters, Miss Cora White, and Mrs. Charles Bruce of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 2 0'clock Monday afternoon in the Cumberland Baptist church,. Interment will be in Atlantic Cemetery.

Pioneer Business Man Laid to Rest Monday July 28

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church for Mr. James W. White, 79, Monday, July 28, at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. Charles E. Segerstrom, officiating.

Mr. White was born September 2, 1872, in Jasper County, the son of John R. and Rachel White. As a boy he came with his parents to a farm seven miles south of Cumberland. At an early age he went to work at the old Atlantic Foundry.

He moved to Cumberland at the age of 20, where he followed the machinist trade and was a pioneer automobile dealer. Surviving are four children, Mrs. Charles Rhinehart of Atlantic, Mrs. Cecil Hyndman, Mary W. and Harley J. White of Cumberland, eight grandchildren, tow great grandchildren, one brother, Miller White of Vulcan, Alberta, Canada, two sisters, Miss Cora White, and Mrs. Charles Bruce of Des Moines.

Mr. J. O. Stahl, accompanied by Mrs. J. O. Stahl, sand 'When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder," "There-'ll Be No Dark Valley" and "Ivory Palaces."

Casket bearers were Leo Culln, Albert Meyer, Carl Hansen, H. H. Hoyt, H. L. Beckemaker and D.J. Lee.

Mrs. Hilary Hoyt and Mrs. Cecil Spencer were in charge of Flowers.

Interment was made in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Relatives attending the service from a distance were: Mrs. Jennie Bruce, of West Des Moines, Mrs. T. H. Purdy, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wolfe and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Long of Red Oak, Mr.and Mrs. Harry Shafer of Griswold, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Parker of Greenfield, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hannon of Shannon City, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Taylor of Massena.
