Red Oak Express, pg. 1, Oct. 5, 1917:
KILLED AT VILLISCA
W. H. Hewitt of Massena was killed in the railroad yards at Villisca Sunday morning when fast mall [ sic mail ] train No. 7 struck him. He and his family were in Villisca to spend the day with the J. M. Sheridan family, and during the morning Mr. Hewitt with one or two others went down to the freight depot. As the fast mail came in sight they were warned of its approach, but instead of stepping to a place of safety Mr. Hewitt stepped directly in front of the train.
His body was carried on the front of the engine for about twenty-five yards before it fell off. He was taken into the baggage room at the station and then to a physician's office but he died about 1 o'clock, an hour and a half after the accident. His left leg was broken, his skull injured and his back broken between the shoulders.
