Thomson, Vale Ulan

Vale Ulan Thomson, 86, Clearfield Iowa, died September 2, 2001, at
Clearview Home in Clearfield. He had a stroke August 13, 2001, and
had been transferred to Clearview Home on August 22, 2001 from Iowa
Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

He was born February 1, 1915, the first child of Herbert C. and Harriet
Pearl Conklin Thomson, at their farm south of Griswold, Iowa.
Vale attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated
from Atlantic High School in 1932. He received a Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine degree in 1938 from Iowa State College and subsequently
purchased the veterinary practice of Dr. Hines in Gravity, Iowa.

On July 28, 1938, he and Annabelle Mabel Herbert married at the home
of her parents near Atlantic, Iowa.
On August 12, 1942, he entered the Army Veterinary Corp as a First
Lieutenant and was discharged in 1946 at the rank of Major.
He moved his family to Clearfield in 1946 and practiced veterinary
medicine until his retirement in 1985.

On August 1, 1980, he married Mona Mae Beemer.
In retirement he enjoyed wood crafting, fishing, traveling, administration
of family farms and visiting with many friends.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge,
Clearfield Lions, Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, American
Veterinary Medical Association, American Legion Post #97, and the
Iowa State Alumni Association.

He is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann Avey of Chandler, AZ, son John U.
Thomson, DVM and wife Kay of Starkville, MS; grandchildren Daniel U.
Thomson, DVM and wife Cindy of Greeley, CO; Holly B. Avey and
husband Steve Rapp of Decatur, GA; David J. Thomson of Council
Bluffs, IA: Josh T Avey and Francee Coleen Brown of Green Valley, AZ:
three great granddaughters, Kelly May, Katelyn Annabelle and Tory ​
Grace Thomson of Greeley, CO: a sister Rita McHaffey and
husband Raymond of Atlantic, IA and friend Vera Morey.

He is preceded in death by his parents and both wives.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the United Methodist Church
in Clearfield with Rev. Lynn Garrison officiating. Music was provided by
Maralene Longfellow and Chantelle Jennett. Casket bearers were
Daniel Thomson, Holly Avey, Davis Thomson, Cindy Thomson, Steve
Rapp, and Josh Avey. Military rites were provided by American Legion
Post 97 of Clearfield. Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery Wilson-
Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
