March 18, 1940MRS. BUTLER, 68, LONG A RESIDENT OF COUNTY, DIES
Mrs. Martha Ellen Butler, 68, widow of the late John B. Butler and resident of Cass county for more that half a century, died at 11:40 this morning at her home, 811 Maple street.
Suffering from complications, she had been in poor health for the last six months and in serious condition for the last week.
Martha Ellen McFarland was born Dec. 7, 1871, in Iowa county, a daughter of Jonathan H. and Jane Elizabeth McFarland. When 9 years old she came to Cass county with her parents, locating on a farm in the Buck Creek vicinity.
She was married at the parental home June 28, 1893, to John B. Butler and lived on a farm near Atlantic until 1929, when she moved into town. Mr. Butler died May 12, 1922.
She is survived by two sons and three daughter, Guy Butler of Atlantic, the Misses Myrle and Opal Butler at home, Dale of Atlantic and Mrs. Frank Just of Wiota. Three children preceded her in death.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. C. W. Harris, of Atlantic; two brothers, C. A. and Ralph E. McFarland, of Atlantic, and an uncle, W. D. McFarland, of Humboldt.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
