Obituary

Maria Syrilda Lynch was born March 28, 1856 at Washington, Ind., and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Stevenson, north of Atlantic, on November 16, 1921, at the age of 65 years, 7 months and 19 days.

In the spring of 1868 the Lynch family migrated from Indiana to Iowa, settling in Cass county just north of the present site of the Buck Creek church in Pymosa township. Here the family grew up amidst the pioneer conditions of this new, but promising commonwealth.

On October 15, 1875, she was married to Joseph K. Herbert, with whom she lived in a beautiful wedded companionship until May 25, 1908, when Mr. Herbert went to the Great Home.

To this union were born six children, all of whom are still living except one daughter who died in early life.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Herbert began housekeeping on the Herbert homestead in north Brighton township. After five years they moved one-quarter mile north and established a farm home of their own. Here they remained till the spring of 1907, a period of twenty-seven years. Here all of the sons and daughters grew up. Here this worthy couple toiled and strove heroically and well for God and man.

Because of failing health they retired to Atlantic in the spring of 1907. This was Mrs. Herbert’s home until the spring of 1914, since which time she has made her home with her children, especially those living in the old Buck Creek neighborhood.

The surviving children are Melville, living west of Atlantic, Roy J., north of Atlantic, Ralph L., of Audubon, Mrs. Florence Smith and Mrs. Ruth Stevenson, both living north of Atlantic.

She also leaves twelve grandchildren, one brother B. B. Lynch of Hastings, Neb., and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Clawson of Council Bluffs ad Mrs. Ava Mitchell of Kansas City.

When a young girl Mrs. Herbert became a Christian, uniting with the Buck Creek M. E. church and remained a loyal and active member of that church until moving to Atlantic. Even then she retained her love for this country church, and showed this affection by her presence at its services and her support of its finances.

She was a long time member of the Eastern Star chapter of Marne and later of Atlantic, having been honored by the office of Worthy Matron and other offices in the first named lodge.

Mrs. Herbert was a woman of unusual qualities of strength and integrity. For many years she has been identified with every activity that has meant the betterment of the material and spiritual interests of the community and the world. In every respect that we consider her many sided life we find her a truly good woman.

For over a year her life has been one of suffering patiently born, and of anticipated home going devoutly longed for. She will be missed by all of us but especially by those who have had the benediction of her loving presence in their home the past months and years.

Her loving words and ministries to her children and grandchildren made her a mother beloved by all.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord and their works do follow them.
