AN OLD RESIDENT GONE.

Mrs. R. B. Butler Passes Away Early Tuesday Morning at Her Home-Came Here in 1863—Native of Virginia.

Mrs. Susan Butler, wife of R. B. Butler, died at her home, 510 East Fifth street, this (Tuesday) Morning about three o’clock after an illness of some duration through only a small portion of which had she been bedfast. Her ailment is thought to have been cancer and a post mortem examination was held today to ascertain the exact nature of the trouble.

Mrs. Butler’s maiden name was Susan Collins. She was a native of Virginia but removed from that state to Indiana with her brother. She came to Cass county with her husband in 1868, having been married in Indiana before that year. She leaves besides her husband, three children, Mrs. John Herbert of north of the city, Mrs. Shoemaker of St. Joseph, Mo., and M. H. (Harley) Butler of this city. Mrs. Butler was 74 years of age.

Mrs. Butler’s death removes from the community one of its best known and loved women. Hers was the kind of Christianity which administers to “all who are weak and heavy laden” regardless of creed or clan. The husband whom she accompanied down life’s pathway and now leaves as both were on the shady side of the hill, and the son and daughters who have felt the influence of her mother love, have sustained a loss in her death which nothing can efface. The world has use for its good women and in the death of Mrs. Susan Butler has suffered a keen loss.

The funeral services for the deceased lady will be held on Thursday afternoon at two o’clock at the residence, 510 East Fifth street.

Obituary.

Susan E. Collins was born in Campbell county, Virginia, September 14, 1830 and died at her home in Atlantic, Cass county, Iowa, August 23, 1904, age 73 years, 11 months, and 9 days. Her mother died before she was three years old and she found a home in the family of an aunt who took the place of a mother and she remained there until she was grown, after which she lived with her brother, the late John A. Collins of this county. She removed from Virginia to Randolph county, Indiana in 1856 and was married to Robert B. Butler, December 25, 1860, and in the fall of 1863 came to this county and settled in Pymosa township. In 1889 they came to Atlantic where she has since resided thus having lived in Cass county for 41 years. Five children were born to them, three sons and two daughters. Two sons died early in youth. The surviving children are M. H. Butler of Atlantic, Mrs. Cora Herbert of Pymosa township, and Mrs. Lillian Schumaker of St. Joeseph [Joseph], Mo. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church nearly 40 years ago and her life work has been a blessing to all who have known and lived near her and if sickness or death came to the homes of her neighbors she was always among the first to render assistance and comfort. Thus ends a long and useful life. She will be sadly missed in her home and by us all.

A beautiful life is ended,
The spirit of dear Aunt Sue,
Has passed o’er the silent river
To the land where our dreams come true.

As a wife, she was ever faithful
To the husband of her choice.
Weeping when he was in trouble,
And happy when he would rejoice.

As a mother, she lived for her children,
Helped them their burdens to bear,
Enjoyed not a single comfort,
In which they could not share.

As a friend, true as steel to the magnet;
As a neighbor, a dear one indeed;
Ever ready to aid and comfort,
In sickness or time of need.

But the brightest of lives have an ending.
The sweetest of flowers decay,
And with hearts that were aching with sorrow,
We silently laid her away.

Yes, she sleeps ‘neath the rose and carnation
Awaiting the final call
When clad in her robes immortal
She will welcome us home, one and all.
