From the Atlantic New Telegraph, Sat Dec 28, 2002, “Lorraine Matthews, a resident of 300 Elm Street, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 91 years, two months and nine days. Funeral services were held at the Roland Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. (part of clipping missing). The Reverend Don Seeger of the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic officiated. Musical selections included: “One Day at a Time,” and “In the Garden.” The organist was Maxine Lyons. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. Pall bearers were Steve Matthews, Troy Matthews, Payton Byers, Eric Matthews, Cody Byers and Todd Matthews. Honorary bearer was Koy Matthews. Marge Scherdin and Lois Schmitt were in charge of flowers. The daughter of Clarence and Amelia Jacobsen Scherdin, Lorraine was born on October 15, 1911, in Atlantic where she grew up and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1931. She was united in marriage to Donald Matthews on July 18, 1935 in Rockport, Mo. The couple resided in Atlantic where Lorraine was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church. Lorraine was also a member of the V.F.W. Royal Neighbors, the American Legion Post No. 43, and she always enjoyed making crafts. Surviving is a son, Don Matthews and his wife Penny, of Beatrice, Nev., and a daughter, Shirley Matthews of Atlantic; three grandchildren, Steven Matthews and his wife Darla of Omaha, Nev., Jan Byers and her husband Payton of Grinnell, and Todd Matthews and his wife Amy of Omaha, Bev., eight great grandchildren, Alexis, Eric Samantha, Troy, Cody, Kasey, Kylie and Koy; and a sister-in-law, Marge Scherdin of Atlantic.”
