November 18, 1910MR. AND MRS. JOHN W. CELEBRATE THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING TODAY
Mr. and Mrs. John W. Butler of Pymosa Township who have been married Fifty Years today.
(From Wednesday's Daily)
Today is the fiftieth wedding anniversary of two of Cass county's grandest pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Butler of Pymosa township. Mr. Butler is 72 years of age and his faithful wife, whose maiden name was Florentina Edwards is 70 years of age.
They are [were] married fifty years ago in Randolph county, Indiana. Their wedding occured just nine days after the election of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency of the United States. The happy young couple were both natives of Randolph county. They moved to Cass county in 1860. They came by wagon across the country and settled on the farm four miles north of the city on which they now reside. The farm was then part of a strip of Prairie land belonging to the Rock Island railroad. Mr. Butler paid $10 an acre for the ground. He has been a good farmer. His record in Cass county has been unsullied by a single act that could be criticised and his neighbors and friends who called upon him today were happy in congratuating [congratulating] this couple with such an honored name.
Five children have been born into this happy family. They are Mrs. Bell Ringle of Atlantic, Edgar O. Butler of Wiota, John B. Butler, a farmer residing in Pymosa township, Emmett E. Butler, of Washington township and Bert L. Butler of Atlantic. The father and mother are especially proud of all their children but the real pride comes forth when they think of the fourteen grandchildren. Mrs. Ringle has two children, Vere and Vesta. Edgar has three Garold, Anna, Emma and Wilma. John R. Butler has the largest family, consisting of five children named Guy, Myrl, Opal, Dale and Thelma. Emmett E., has three children, Marian, Beulah and Pauline and Bert Butler has one daughter, Aletha.
Mr. Butler has one brother, R. B. living in Atlantic.
The couple who celebrate today enjoy the strong combination of being republican and Methodist. Possibly the Methodist ought to be put first. Mr. Butler has been a republican ever since his first vote. As Methodists Mr. and Mrs. Butler have helped support the church since their marriage. They founded the Buck Creek church in 1874. This is the church which was blown down by the storm in 1903. After collecting the insurance money the congregation rebuilt the church and it is still known as the Buck Creek Methodist church.
Today a host of friends took advantage of the opportunity to call and extend their congratulations to this worthy couple. The Telegraph joins in extending its best wishes and hopes Mr. and Mrs. Butler may live many years to enjoy the fruits of their well-earned prosperity.
