Adams County Union, August 3, 1893.

Disappearance of A. S. Bright.

On last Monday, quite a sensation was caused in this community by the financial failure and sudden disappearance of one of our most influential and ostensibly, reliable men, A. S. Bright. It came like a crash, taking everybody completely by surprise. As Mr. Bright has lived in Cass county so long, it is needless for us to make any comment whatsoever, upon his character except he seemed to enjoy the utmost confidence of all who knew him. He was dealing in stock and grain at this place and was apparently prospering financially. About 9 o’clock Sunday morning, he hitched up his horse and buggy and drove out of town, no one suspected that he was leaving for parts unknown, never to make a voluntary return. It was not till the following morning that the real nature of things began to be seen and it was soon learned that he had deserted his business, his home and his family, leaving his family with no means whatsoever. He also has a great many creditors and sureties behind, deep down in the soup, and has it is claimed forged notes to the amount of $6,000 to $8,000. His sureties, at the Bank of Cumberland have been ably taken care of and protected fully by the shrewdness and fine business ability of Wm. Waddell, whom they should thank down in their hearts for his excellent foresight and protection.
Later-
News has reached us that the Atlantic National and Commercial Banks of Atlantic are heavy losers in the way of forgery committed by Mr. Bright.
