Manning- Clarence August Barten,77, of Manning died Thursday, Oct. 25, 1990, at the Manning General Hospital. Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert Riggert. Burial will be at the Manning City Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517. Visitation will begin Saturday after 11 a.m. at the church. Mr. Barten was born Feb. 27, 1913 in Crawford County, Iowa, a son of Chris and Emma (Ross) Barten. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran church in Manning. He attended Manning schools and graduated from Manning High School in 1930. After graduation from high school, he attended business college in Des Moines. After business college, he returned to the Manning area where he farmed with his parents. On June 15, 1941, he married Maurine Andresen at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He served in the Air Force during World War II as a meteorologist. After his honorable discharge, they farmed east of Manning for three years before moving to town. He worked for Priebe Hatchery for several years before beginning his work with the Manning Creamery Co. where he was employed until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He had been in ill health for several years before becoming a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in July 1990. Survivors include his wife, Maurine, of Manning; a son, Lonnie Barten, of Carroll; and a sister, Eleanor Kinney of Tucson, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ernest Barten.
