I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 8 March 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
[Hermann Maus]
Hermann Maus, an honest German-American and an old settler of Carroll County, died last Sunday at his house in Carroll. Just Saturday, the deceased was seen cheerful and healthy on the streets of Carroll. And on Sunday morning, he desired to attend church services in Sheridan Township. Therefore, his youngest son harnessed the horse to the buggy, and along the way, in the neighborhood of Odendahl’s farm, Hermann Maus complained of a headache. His son returned home quickly and placed the old gentleman immediately in bed, but within a few hours he had surrendered his soul to his Creator. The doctor, who was immediately called, could only state that human assistance was futile and that apoplexy was the cause of the sudden illness. On Wednesday morning, the funeral proceeded from the home of the deceased, officiated by the Rev. Pastor Müller of the Lutheran Parish in Sheridan Township, and was attended by many mourners. The mortal remains were interred in the Lutheran Parish cemetery in Sheridan Township. Our condolences to the survivors.
