Oct 21, 1946 - Carroll Times - Mrs. Catherine McGrane, who lived in this community for many years before going to Ft. Dodge to make her home with her son, Charles, died at 3:25 Saturday afternoon at the St. Anthony hospital. She was 80 years old.
Mrs. McGrane succumbed to an illness of several months. Before being taken to the hospital 10 days ago, she had been at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James McGrane south of Arcadia for five months.
Funeral services are to be at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Father R.J. Quinn of Vail will offer the requiem mass. Burial will be beside her husband in the parish cemetery. The body was returned yesterday afternoon from the Sharp Funeral home to the home of her son, James, on the old homestead, where the rosary, led by the Rev. Father Quinn, will be prayed at 8 o'clock tonight.
Mrs. McGrane was born Catherine Fitzsenry March 30, 1866, at Oconto, Wis. When she was seven years old she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Fitzsenry, to Carroll county. They settled on a farm west of Breda in Wheatland township.
She married John McGrane June 5, 1888, at St. John's church in Arcadia, with the Rev. Father Schulte officiating. They located on their farm three miles west and one-quarter of a mile south of Halbur, where they lived until their retirement in 1920. After spending two winters in California, they moved to Omaha, where they lived for a year before coming to Carroll in 1923. Mr. McGrane died April 27, 1925.
Five years after her husband's death, or in 1930, Mrs. McGrane went to Fort Dodge, where she lived with her son, Charles, for 16 years. She was the last of a family of five children.
Her surviving sons and daughters are: James, Arcadia; John, Wadena, Minn.; Mrs. Hubert Tacke (Catherine), Rock Rapids, Iowa; Clarence, Carroll; and Charles, Fort Dodge. She also leaves 31 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Three daughters preceded her in death.
