John H. Fleskes, Mt. Carmel, Dies

John H, Fleskes, 79, a partner with his son, Leo, in the general store at Mt. Carmel, died at 1:02 a.m. Sunday at St. Anthony Hospital. He had been in declining health the last six months.

A native of Germany, Mr. Fleskes had lived in Carroll County since he was five years old.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, three daughters, 30 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one brother.

John H. Fleskes, 79, part owner of the general store at Mt. Carmel, died as 1:02 a.m. Sunday after being in failing health for six months. He had been in the hospital since April 29.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. The Rev. Gerald Zensen will offer requiem mass. Burial will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

The body is resting at the Sharp Funeral Home, where the rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Monday by the Holy Name Society of the Mt. Carmel parish; at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Knights of Columbus, and at 8 p.m. Tuesday, led by Fr. Zensen.

Mr. Fleskes had been in the mercantile business at Mt. Carmel since 1923, when he formed a partnership with the late J. M. Berger. In 1938, his son, Leo, purchased Mr. Berger’s interest, the father and son partnership continuing to the present time. The elder Mr. Fleskes had been active in the store until the first of the year.

Mr. Fleskes was born Feb. 20, 1875, at Essen, Germany. In 1880, he came to Carroll County with his parents, Theodore and Bernadine Fleskes, who settled in Kniest Township.

As a young man, Mr. Fleskes engaged in construction work, building churches and homes. In 1905 he went into the mercantile business at Maple River. In 1920 he moved to a farm near Mt. Carmel. After farming for three years, he went into business at Mt. Carmel.

He married Margaret Julich at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church May 8, 1900, with the Rev. G. H. Luehrsman officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Fleskes celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1950.

Surviving with his wife are six children; 30 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one brother, Ewald Fleskes, Carroll. The children are: Al T. Fleskes, Fort Dodge; Ed M. Fleskes, Carroll; Mrs. Tony (Mathilda) Boes, Breda; Mrs. Ed (Marie) Kanne, Carroll; Mrs. Louis (Henrietta) Bernady, Waterloo; and Leo Fleskes, Mt. Carmel. One brother and one sister are deceased.

Mr. Fleskes was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church; Charles Carroll Council No. 780, Knights of Columbus, and the holy name Society of the Mt. Carmel parish.
