I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. The obituary was originally published on Friday, 22 January 1909. I have not changed the name or place spellings. Any information in brackets and notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
Maria Anna Kaiser
On Thursday, 14 January 1909, the Lord of life and death saw fit to call away Mrs. Maria A. Kaiser from this life to eternity. The deceased, whose maiden name was Olberding, was born on 22 December 1849 in Oldenburg, Germany. She married Mr. Clemens Berens in 1874. Shortly thereafter, they immigrated to America and settled near Petersburg, Iowa. The couple remained here until 1875, when they relocated to Carroll County and settled near Breda. Five children were born to this marriage, namely: Henry Berens, residing in Summerville, Kansas; John, in Arcadia; Bernard, in Templeton; Clem, in Randolph, Nebraska; and Mrs. John Terlisner from here. Her husband died in 1880. Two years later, she married Mr. Anton Kaiser of Breda, who predeceased her in 1891. The following children were born to this later marriage: Anton and Herman, residing in Randolph, Nebraska; and Anna, who up to now has been keeping house for her mother and her brother, John. Her loss is also mourned by her brothers: Clemens, Herman, Heinrich H. and Bernard Olberding; and her sisters, Mrs. Joseph Weber, and Mrs. John Naber.
Mrs. Kaiser was a devout Catholic, a good wife, and a caring and loving mother to her children. She enjoyed the greatest respect of everyone who ever came in contact with her. She died after receiving the Last Rights of her religion at St. Anthony's hospital in Carroll, where she was transferred for purposes of an operation a few weeks ago.
The funeral took place at the local St. John’s Church [in Arcadia] under direction of the Rev. Jos. Schulte, and her earthly remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. May she rest in peace.
NOTES: Oldenburg is a town and a region in northern Germany. The town in about 25 miles west of Bremen.
