I translated the following obituary and shorter article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. They were both originally published on Friday, 29 January 1886. I have not changed the name or place spellings, and have added some information in brackets and notes at the end. It reads as follows:

Death Notice

Last week on Friday, 22 January, following a short illness, our dear neighbor and fellow-citizen, Bernard Rohlmann, passed away after receiving Last Rights. With many people in attendance, his earthly remains were laid to their final rest on Monday, 25 January, at the cemetery in Hillsdale [Roselle].

He was born in Appelhülsen [could also be spelled Appelhuelsen or Appelhulsen], Westphalia, on 16 May 1815. In 1878, he and his family immigrated to America and settled in our midst. He was always highly respected by everyone, and was known as a good neighbor. He leaves behind a grieving family, consisting of his wife, three sons, the youngest of which is 11 years old, four daughters, two sons-in-law, and several grandchildren. One daughter still lives in Germany with her uncle. He had reached the age of 70 years, 8 months, and 6 days. Peace to his ashes!

[There is a short memorial poem here of several lines.]

The grieving survivors wish to thank everyone who helped the deceased in word and deed during his sickness, and everyone who attended the funeral.

[The following short article was published the same day.]

The funeral of B. Rohlmann was the largest that had occurred for quite some time in Hillsdale, and many people had come from near and far in order to pay him their last respects. The day was pleasant and warm.

NOTES: Roselle cemetery records list Bernard Rohlmann, 16 May 1815 to 22 Jan 1886, and Bernardina Rohlmann, 1835 to 23 November 1889.
