ZITZLSPERGER

I translated the following obituary, and death announcement, from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. They were both originally published on Friday, 16 November 1894. The second article was published under the Willey News column. I have kept the name and place spellings as they were in the article, and have added some information in brackets and notes at the end. It reads as follows:

Mr. George Zitzlsperger, who had been ill for several months, passed away last Thursday. He was born on 1 March 1851 in the parish of Kinzing, Osterhofen, Niederbayern [Lower Bavaria]. He immigrated to America in 1875 and settled in Carroll County, where he married Miss Anna Bauer on 16 April 1883. His deeply bereaved widow and two minor children mourn the deceased. The remains were laid to rest Saturday at the cemetery in Willey. A great many people were present to pay their final respects. May he rest in peace.

Willey [Same Day]

George Zitzlsperger, following an illness of several months, has passed on to the better hereafter. He died on the 8th of November—Thursday, last week—and was buried on Saturday. Many mourners from here and the surrounding area followed the coffin to the cemetery. A widow and two minor children mourn the departed. The deceased was a member of the Roman Catholic Mutual Protective Society, Branch Association No. 93. May he rest in peace.

NOTES: The town where he was born may be Künzing, also spelled Kuenzing. Osterhofen is in Bavaria, about 15 or 20 miles northwest of Passau.
