March 8, 1943 - Carroll Times - Final rites were held at St. Joseph's Church here shortly before noon today for Daniel J. Coates, long time resident of Carroll and vicinity, who died Saturday morning at the hospital in Clarinda, where he had been a patient for nine years. Rt. Rev. Monsignor P.T. Lynch officiated at the short service. The requiem mass had been offered at the Catholic church in Clarinda earlier this morning.

The body arrived in Carroll at 11:15 this morning and was taken to the Huffman Funeral Home before being removed to St. Joseph's Church. Burial was in the family lot in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Coates, a son of John and Mary Coates, who were well known Carroll County pioneers, was born April 10, 1862, in Schuykill County, Pa. He would have been 81 years old on April 10. March 7, 1878, he came to Carroll County with his parents, who made their home on a farm two miles east of Carroll before moving into town forty-two years ago. Mr. Coates mother died in 1899, and his father passed away prior to that time.

For many years Mr. Coates made his home with his sisters, Mary and Ellen, in the family residence on North East Street. Miss Mary Coates died March 16, 1934, and Miss Ellen Coates passed away less than twenty-four hours later.

Mr. Coates was the last of a family of eight children. He had three sisters and four brothers. Survivors include three cousins, one of whom, Thomas J. Coates of Denver, Colo., was present at the rites. A sister-in-law Mrs. Lulu B. Coates of Sioux City, widow of Frank Coates, and her two sons, Frank M. of Kansas City, Mo., and John F. Coates and his wife of Sioux City were also here for the services.
