Feb 10, 1958 - Carroll Daily Times - Mrs. John James, 80, a resident of Carroll County since she was six months old, died in St. Anthony Hospital at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. She had been in poor health for some time and seriously ill since Christmas. The body may be viewed at the Huffman Funeral home after 5 p.m. Monday. Final rites will be held at the Methodist church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday with Rev. Bys officiating. Burial will be in the Carroll city cemetery.
Mrs. James was born Edith Morgan, February 5, 1878 at Coal Valley, Illinois. Her parents, Jacob and Ann Morgan, had come to the United States from Wales. Her father engaged in coal mining in Coal Valley, Illinois until the family moved to Templeton, Carroll county, Iowa in 1878. She was married to John James at the Presbyterian Manse in Carroll March 25, 1903, by the Rev. W.H. Jordan. Mr. James passed away on January 26, 1949.
Surviving are a son Gurney James at home; two daughters Mrs. Leon (Rena) Thorne of Sheldon and Mrs. Don L. (Mabel) Hillyer of Carroll; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her husband were a son William, who passed away in infancy, a brother Evor Morgan and half brother Joe Charles. Mrs. James received her education in rural schools. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Feb 13, 1958 - Carroll Daily Times - Mrs John James, 80, who passed away at St Anthony Hospital Sunday afternoon following an illness of three months, was laid to rest beside her husband in Carroll City Cemetery, Wednesday afternoon. Funeral rites were held in the Methodist church at 2 p.m. the Rev Ivan Bys, pastor of the church officiating. Pallbearers were William Hughes of Templeton, Homer England, Eugene Osborne, Wayne Harriot, John C Schumacher, and Roy Hueton of Carroll.
Mrs James was the mother of Mrs Don L. (Mabel) Hillyer and Gurney James of Carroll and Mrs Leon (Rena) Thorne of Sheldahl, all of whom were present at the services.
Among others attending were Mrs Hillyers daughter Dorothy Hodges, a student at Simpson college, Indianola, and three of Mrs Thorne's children: Janie, Leon Jr and John of Sheldahl; Mrs Ralph Sheffield of Storm Lake; Mrs and Mrs J.B. McCleary and Kenny Way of Des Moines; Mrs Leonard Wearth of Ames; Mrs Bell Emery, Mrs William Hughes, and Mrs Earl Miller of Templeton; Mr and Mrs Roy Williams, Mrs Anna Scott, and C.E. Buckner of Audubon; Mr and Mrs Darrell Scott, Viola; Mr and Mrs Merill Keith, Denison; Harley Thorne, Coon Rapids; Robert Kennett of Simpson College, Indianola; and Mr and Mrs Emery Kennett of Lidderdale.
