Aug 30, 1935 - Carroll Daily - Mrs. Kate M. Hastings, wife of E.R. Hastings, a former owner and editor of the Carroll Herald, died at the home of her son, the Rev. Edward E. Hastings, in Joliet, Illinois, Thursday morning. Funeral services will be held in Joliet Saturday. The body will be taken to Chicago for cremation. Later her ashes will be placed in the Carroll cemetery by the side of her husband, who died Oct 1866.
Born Kate Manning she was married to Mr Hastings in Jefferson. They came to Carroll and made their home on North Clark street.
The original press of the Carroll Herald was purchased by William Gilley, jr, father of Mrs. E.J. Pelsue. He employed J.F.H. Sugg as editor. Later it was bought by O.H. Manning, a cousin of Mrs. Hastings. Mr. Manning was at one time Lieut. Gov. of Iowa. The town of Manning was named in tribute to him. Mr. Manning sold The Herald in 1870 to Mr. Hastings, who owned it until forced to retire from business because of his health. He sold it to J.B. Hungerford.
Mrs Hastings is survived by an only son, the Rev. Mr. Hastings, the pastor of the central Presbyterian church of Joliet. His wife was May Bailey, daughter of the Rev. T.L. Bailey, who at one time was the pastor of the Carroll Presbyterian church.
