Sept 13, 1917 - Carroll Times - Mrs. J.B. Diehl passed away at her home last Thursday morning after a few minutes sickness, being taken with aedema of the lungs. She was in her usual health upon awakening in the morning but was taken with severe pains and died almost instantly. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home and were conducted by Rev. Haughtelin, of Panora.

Mrs. Diehl, nee Miss Mary E. Simmers, was born at Dayton, Rockingham county, Virginia, October 7, 1835. She moved with her parents to Ogle county, Illinois, in 1855, and on December 4, 1862, was united in marriage to John B. Diehl.

Mr. and Mrs. Diehl came to Iowa with their family in 1869, settling in Dallas county. Later they moved to Boone county and came to Carroll county in 1885. Five years later they moved to this city where they have since resided. Mr. Diehl died December 27, 1915, and since that time Mrs. Diehl and daughter, Laura, have continued living in the old home.

Mrs. Diehl was a very active woman, beloved by her family and many friends. At an early age she was united with the church of the Brethren (The Dunkard Church) and contiuned in that faith all her life. She had a kindly word and smile for every one and made lasting friendships.

Mrs. Diehl was one of thirteen children and is survived by four brothers and one sister. She leaves four children: Mrs. Emma E. Johnson, Pilot Mound; Samuel J. Diehl, Beaver Dam; Mrs. Susie E. Harding and Miss Laura Diehl, Carroll, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.
