Patient Sufferer Now At Rest

Mrs. Jane English Passed Quietly Away Sunday Night at 10 O'clock.

After more than four years of helpless, patient suffering, Mrs. Jane English passed to the great beyond Sunday evening about 10 o'clock, at her home just north of the city. March 23, 1900, she was stricken with paralysis and on the first of May the same year she received a second stroke, since which time she has been confined to her bed a helpless invalid. Notwithstanding her physical ills her mind remained clear and her heart unclouded by her misfortunes, retaining her cheerfulness to the last. Monday morning, the week before her death, she sank into a sleep from which she never wakened, passing to her rest beyond the grave as quietly and peacefully as a child falls asleep in its mother's arms.

Jane H. Fry was born in Quebec, Canada, Sept. 1, 1828, her father being an officer in the British army. She was married June 19, 1845, to John W. English, at Niagara, Ont., the celebrated Bishop Carene performing the ceremony. Four years later the young couple came to "the States," living until 1872 in Wisconsin. In the latter year they removed to Roselle township, this county, where they resided on a farm for 11 years, moving to their place north of town in 1883. Her husband died on his seventy-eighth birthday, July 9, 1901, since which time she and her daughter Nellie have lived alone, the faithfulness and good cheer of this daughter through all these years of caring for the helpless invalid being a noble example of womanly tenderness and affection. When thirteen years old deceased was confirmed in the Episcopal church and December, 14, 1890, she united with the Presbyterian church of this city. All her life she was a devoted christian and died full in the faith.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 at the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. W. H. Jordan, and attended by a great many friends of the family. Deceased leaves a family of eight children, as follows, all of whom were present at the funeral but Henry, who was unable to get here: Mrs. Sarah Hobbs of Jasper township; Henry J. of Everett, Wash.; Frank of Council Bluffs; William of Fremont, Neb.; Walter of Omaha; Ernest of Hastings, Neb.; Edward and Miss Nellie.
