CECILIA HOULIHAN

Mass of the Christian burial for Cecilia Houlihan of Carroll will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. Mrs. Houlihan, 89, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Rev. James McCormick will celebrate the Mass and lectors will be Patrick Schleisman, Kay Lynn Houlihan and Kelly Houlihan. Gift bearers will be Michelle Satterlee, Ann Wiederhold and Elisa Schleisman, mass servers will be Patrick Schreck and Jon Schreck and Eucharistic ministers will be Judy Schreck and Christy O'Gara. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas and St. Anthony's Nurses Alumnae Association will form an honor guard.

Graveside rites will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Denison. Casket bearers will be Howie Drees Jr., Steve Wiederhold, Patrick Schleisman, Curtis Houlihan, David Houlihan, Bryan Houlihan, Casey Houlihan and Greg Schreck.

Friends may call after 2:30 p.m. Friday and a 3 p.m. rosary will be recited at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. The parish will hold a Christian wake service at 7:30 Friday night.

The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Memorials to Holy Spirit Parish may be left at the funeral home.

A daughter of Herman and Ella (Timp) Gehling Sr., she was born July 5, 1913, at Carroll.

She attended Sts. Peter, and Paul Elementary School and graduated from St. Angela Academy in Carroll. She graduated from the St. Anthony School of Nursing in 1935 and then worked at St. Anthony Hospital. She and James Houlihan were married Oct. 11, 1937, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll.

The Houlihans lived for a year in Coon Rapids before moving to Carroll, where Mrs. Houlihan performed special nursing duties, was bookkeeper for the family business Houlihan Oil and cared for her father for 13 years.

Mrs. Houlihan was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, its Ladies Guild, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Anthony Nurses Alumnae Association and past member of the Kuemper Parents Club. She enjoyed golf, playing bridge and traveling.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Pat and Howard Drees of Carroll, Jane and Richard Wiederhold of Plattsmouth, Neb., Elaine and Steve Schleisman of Munich, Germany, and Michael Houlihan and his wife, Beth, of Kenosha, Wis.; 20 grandchildren; 2 9 greatgrandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Lois Houlihan of Carroll.

Mrs. Houlihan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James in 1989; a son, Lee Houlihan; a grandson, Jerome Drees; five brothers, Henry Gehling, Theodore Gehling, Herman Gehling, William Gehling and another in infancy; and four sisters, Mary Reiling, Agnes Wernimont, Catherine Masching and Sister Ann Gehling.
