Mrs. Schmich Passes Portals

Highly Respected Woman of This City Succumbs to Cancer at the Hospital

Shortly after midnight Tuesday morning, Mrs. Geo. Schmich passed away at St. Anthony's hospital in this city, after having suffered with cancer since early last summer. She had been a patient at the hospital since early December, where all that loving and kind hands could do for her had been done, but no hopes were had for her ultimate recovery and her soul fled this life as above stated. She had been a patient sufferer and up till the last she steadfastly showed that good Christian spirit with which she was imbued. Her death is a hard blow to sorrowing relatives and especially to her family of six children who are now bereft of a loving mother's kindness, care and guidance. In the many years that she had been a resident of this county she had endeared herself to all who knew her and she had ever proved herself one of those excellent women who, by their kindly and congenial natures, are beloved by a community.

Mary Theresa Berger, daughter of Peter Berger of this city, was born in Blackhawk county, October 16, 1868. When a child of two years her parents moved to Carroll county and here she lived continuously up to the time of her death. She was married here on May 6th, 1890, to Geo. A. Schmich and to this union were born six children all of whom are living to mourn her demise as follows, William, Anna, Albert, Florence, Kathrine and Lorena, all of them at home -- a home now broken up by the death angel. She leaves to mourn her death, besides the heartbroken children, a father, two brothers and four sisters. She was a devout Catholic and passed away well fortified in the last holy sacraments of the church. In her death Carroll loses a loving mother and a good Christian woman, one who in life enjoyed the love and respect of neighbors and friends alike.

The funeral services were held this morning, Thursday, from SS. Peter and Paul's church, high requiem mass being held over departed, after which all that was mortal of this good woman was laid tenderly to rest in the final resting place in the Catholic cemetery.
