Parker Killed in Action

Mr. and Mrs. Longley Parker received a telegram Wednesday evening that their son, Gurney Parker, had been killed in action September 28th. It is singular that they had not been notified of their son's death much sooner, and the delay in reporting the casualty may mean that other Iowa boys have been killed or wounded and which fact has not yet been reported to relatives. Naturally there will be a good many anxious parents in the locality until their sons are heard from directly. Gurney Parker reached France about six months ago and was soon placed in the trenches and evidently was in some of the charges in the Hun retreats, the manner in which he was killed not yet being known. He is the first so far as known going from Coon Rapids to be killed in battle in France and the parents and relatives have the profound sympathy of the entire community. Other Coon Rapids boys, however, have suffered injuries. Fenn Cooney was severely wounded and is still in the hospital, and Frank Jenks, John W. Kerns and Francis Bower have been severely gassed. When the list of casualties from this locality is finally made up it will be found that Coon Rapids has furnished her full quota and made sacrifices in good measure. -- Enterprise.
