Fred F. Bruning Died October 1, While On Way To France

Returned For Burial

Body Expected to Arrive Middle of the Present Week

Flags were lowered at half-mast Monday upon receiving word of the death of Private Fred F. Bruning which occurred on Thursday, October 1st at sea, death being caused by pneumonia.

Deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bruning and was born October 22, 1888, at Breda. He was a barber by occupation and at the time of his induction into the service on July 29, 1918, was owner and proprietor of the barber shop here. About five months ago he underwent an operation for appendicitis at the hospital in Carroll. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters and was a devout member of the Catholic church. He also carried $10,000 government life insurance. He was the first one from this place to give his life for his country, and the remains are expected to arrive here on Wednesday or Thursday. Funeral services will be held at the Catholic church and interment made in the Catholic cemetery here.

Besides his parents he leaves to mourn his death six brothers, Ben, of Mobridge, South Dakota; Herman, Lawrence and Edmund, of this place; Joe, in the mechanics branch of the service, stationed in Alabama, and Louis, now stationed at McArthur, Texas, and four sisters, Elizabeth, of Maple River, and Blondina, Frances and Adeline, of this place. The bereaved parents and members of the family have the sympathy of all.
