Mrs. Mary Bruning, 77, Breda, Dies Sunday Evening

Protracted Illness Takes Life of Gold Star Mother

Breda (HNS) -- Death claimed Mrs. Mary Bruning, 77, gold star mother for whose son the Fred F. Bruning Post of the American Legion was named, at 11:35 Sunday evening at her home here concluding a long illness.

Mrs. Bruning had been in poor health for a number of years and had been seriously ill for the past two weeks, with complications attendant upon her advanced age.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but rites are to be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Church in Breda, probably conducted by the Rev. E. L. Schleyer. Burial will be at Breda.

Surviving Mrs. Bruning are one brother, Joe Gietz of Carroll, and the following children: Bernard Bruning of Mobridge, S. D., Mrs. Norris Royalty (Francis) Sioux City, Adelaide Bruning, Armstrong; H. J. Bruning, Joe E. Bruning, Louis M. Bruning, Lawrence Bruning, Ed Bruning and Blandina Bruning, all of Breda, the latter making her home with her mother. There are also sixteen grandchildren.

Mrs. Bruning's husband, Henry Bruning, died May 5, 1936. One son, Fred F. Bruning, died in France with the American Expeditionary forces Oct. 1, 1918; a daughter, Elizabeth, died Dec. 18, 1918. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and one brother: Fred Gietz of Dubuque, Mrs. Matt Weber (Elizabeth) of Butte, Neb. and Anna Gietz of Breda.

Mrs. Bruning was born Dec. 26, 1862, at New Vienna, Ia., daughter of William and Elizabeth Gietz. When but a small girl she came with her family to Carroll county to live on a farm near Carmel. Sept. 20, 1881, she was married to Henry Bruning at St. Bernard's Church in Breda, the Rev. Father Norton celebrating the nuptials. Mrs. Bruning was a member of St. Bernard's Church and of the Christian Mothers Sodality of the parish. She was also a gold star mother of the American Legion Auxiliary.
