Mrs. T. Berger, Willey, Dies of Stroke Saturday

Was 79 at Time of Her Death; Funeral To Be Tuesday

Willey (Special) -- Mrs. Theresa Berger, pioneer resident of Willey, died at her home at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Berger had enjoyed her usual good health until Friday morning, July 30, when she suffered a slight stroke. A second stroke a week later left her in an unconscious condition. She passed away at the age of 79.

Solemn requiem high mass will be read at the funeral services which will be at St. Mary's church in Willey at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning. Rev. H. J. Dries will be the celebrant of the mass; Rev. Michael Wendl of Spencer, deacon; Rev. Louis Anthofer of Roselle, sub-deacon, and Rev. Joseph Steiger of Earling, master of ceremonies. Rev. Father Steiger will deliver the sermon.

Burial in St. Mary's

Burial, under the direction of the Gregory funeral home, will be in St. Mary's cemetery and pallbearers

will be six sons, George, Frank, John, Michael, Joseph and Mathias Berger.

Mrs. Berger was born Theresa Nagl in Kinzing, Bavaria, Germany, on Oct. 8, 1857. At the age of 19 she came to the United States and immediately joined her brother, the late Michael Nagl, of Carroll, who had come to this county 19 months before. For the following six years she worked in Carroll.

On Nov. 28, 1882, she was united in marriage to Peter Berger at Holy Angels church, Roselle. Mr. and Mrs. Berger located on a farm in Pleasant Valley township.

10 Children

They were the parents of ten children: Mrs. John Flies (Frances), Audubon; Peter Berger and George Berger, Willey; Frank Berger, Dedham; John Berger, Bode; Michael Berger, Roselle; Joseph Berger, Carroll; Mrs. Ben Grossman (Mary), Willey, Mrs. Ben Brincks (Catherine), Willey, and Mathias Berger, Glidden. All of her children were present at the time of her death.

Mrs. Berger was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Nagl of Willey, who died Dec. 9, 1915, and Michael Nagl of Carroll, who passed away June 14, 1936, and by two sisters: Mrs. Frank Westermeier (Frances), of Beardsley, Minn., who died Nov. 13, 1912, and Mrs. George Danzer, sr., (Mary), of Willey, Sept 25, 1933. Her husband, Peter Berger, died May 1, 1926.

Mrs. Berger was a devout member of St. Mary's church and of the Rosary sodality of the parish. Besides her children and 50 grandchildren, her death is mourned by a host of other relatives and friends.
