Dewey Hargens
July 10, 1921 - November 17, 2009
Dewey Herman, son of Herman Hans and Laura (Jansen) Hargens, was born July 10, 1921 in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended country school in Audubon and Carroll Counties and then started working.
On December 4, 1941, Dewey was united in marriage with Opal Brockman at Koontz Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha. They were the parents of three children and Dewey joined the Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia where his wife was a lifelong member. They farmed and Dewey worked at Cal-Car, Rotert’s Construction of Halbur and Aspinwall Coop. Dewey and Opal owned and operated the “Chicken Inn Bar and Grill” in Halbur from 1978 until retiring in 1983. In 2005 they moved into the Terrace Apartments in Manning after living on the same farm north of Manning for over 50 years.
Because of their sponsorship of slow pitch softball, Dewey and Opal were inducted into the Carroll County 16” Hall of Fame as super fans in 2005. Dewey enjoyed bowling and softball over the years and was an avid card player.
Dewey entered the Manning General Hospital early in November of 2009 and he died there on November 17, 2009 at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 7 days.
Preceding him in death are his parents; parents-in-law Gerhardt and Martha Brockman; three brothers Harold, Wayne and Merlin Hargens and two sisters Elaine Kroeger and Irene Hansen.
He is survived by his wife Opal Hargens of Manning; two sons Dennis Hargens and wife Sandra of Urbandale and Dean Hargens and wife Beth of Solon; daughter Janis and husband David Benton of Rio Rancho, NM; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother Don Hargens of Griswold; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
