I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 25 October 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
Maple River and Breda
On Monday Friedrich Mohr, 75 years of age, and his wife, 74 years of age, were laid to rest at the Lutheran cemetery. Two daughters, Louisa and Katharina, and four sons, Friedrich, Peter, Wilhelm, and Johann, mourn at the graves of the departed. In 1887 their son Christian preceded them in death. Rev. Pastor Mueller of Wall Lake gave a moving account of the lives of the departed. It is indeed rare that husband and wife pass away so soon after each other. Until two weeks before their deaths, they were both enjoying the best of health, but unfortunately then came the onset of a small cold, which then worsened, such that Mr. Mohr passed way on Friday evening, and his wife on Sunday morning. They both certainly had experienced many storms in life, and days of hope, disappointment, joy, suffering, sorrow, and privation. But the good Lord gave their Christian hearts the courage and patience to withstand the tests. In their later years, their hard work and Christian zeal were rewarded with success, in that they acquired a respectable degree of financial security and provided their children with a good upbringing. Who would have thought just two years ago, when the elderly couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, that in such a short time they would be called to eternity? But God’s will is mysterious. May God grant them eternal peace.
