I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 28 Dec 1894. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
Breda
On Wednesday the sad news came that our very popular fellow-citizen, Peter Bachmann, fully conscious to the end, passed away quietly. The deceased had suffered for a year from a cancerous affliction of the lower lip, and other additional disabilities of life finally brought his allotted life to full measure. He stood in the 71st year of his life, and his death is mourned by his widow, his son Anton, his three daughters, Mrs. J. Ludwig of Carroll, Mrs. Anton Thelen and Miss Olivia from here, a brother in Davenport, Iowa, as well as other relatives, numerous friends, and acquaintances. His earthly remains were to be interred on 27 December. R. I. P.
