I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 8 March 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
Arcadia
[Mr. and Mrs. Hermann Precht]Mr. Hermann Precht, who had been ill for about two weeks with pneumonia, passed away last Saturday evening at the age of 64 years, 2 months, and 15 days. His dear wife, who had reached the age of 59 years, and at the same time was bed-ridden with the same illness, followed her husband into eternity on Sunday afternoon. The couple’s remains were interred by Pastor Hermann of the local Lutheran Church at Brüggemann’s cemetery with a large number of people in attendance. May they rest in peace. They leave behind three grown sons, namely: Hermann, Friedrich, and Heinrich. The latter lives in Stuttgart, Arkansas, and he arrived even while his parents’ bodies were already in the church, where Pastor Hermann gave a deeply moving funeral sermon and blessed the bodies.
NOTES: Cemetery records state that Hermann Precht lived from 12 Dec 1830 to 2 Mar 1895, and Anna Sophia Precht from 10 Dec 1835 to 3 Mar 1895.
