I translated the following obituary from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 5 July 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
Peter Hausmann
We bring the sad news to our readers that Peter Hausmann of Hillsdale passed away quietly on Sunday morning at the age of 76 after having received the Last Rights of the Catholic Church. Just a few days earlier, the elderly old gentleman was still enjoying fairly good health. He caught a cold eight days before his death, but he appeared to have successfully overcome it until his condition worsened on Friday, and on Sunday he gave up his soul to his creator. The deceased, father of our highly respected fellow-citizen Christ Hausmann, was a resident of Carroll County for many years, highly respected by all his acquaintances and loved by his fellow-citizens on account of his pious ways, his sense of justice, and his kindly disposition. The burial service, which took place Tuesday morning from the Catholic Church in Hillsdale, was an eloquent testimony of the sympathies of all his fellow-citizens and acquaintances. The funeral service was first-rate and ended with a solemn Requiem in the Catholic Church at Hillsdale. Our deepest sympathies to the bereaved.
NOTES: Cemetery records list his date of birth as 15 Apr 1820, and death as 30 Jun 1895.
