I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Information in brackets and notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

Heinrich Anton Drees

The bearer of this name was born on 8 October 1865 in New Vienna, Dubuque County, Iowa. After successfully attending school, he turned to farm work and labored industriously with his father on his parents’ farm until he was 21 years old. On 1 February 1887 Mr. Drees married the respectable Miss Anna Angela Fangmann, whereupon the young couple moved to the farm of the young woman’s parents near New Vienna.

In 1888 the young family moved to Roselle Township, Carroll County, where Mr. Drees purchased a 160-acre farm, on which he still lives today.

The farm is among the best in the township, has an excellent location, and is equipped with good stables, barns, etc, and also a fine residence.

Mr. Drees and his wife are known in the entire county, and they are respected and esteemed by all on account of their good character.

This happy marriage had produced seven children, and they are named: Elisabeth, Anna, Ella, Joseph, Cecilia, Rosa, and Johann.
