I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Words in quotations are original. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

Hermann H. Havermann

Mr. Havermann was born in the Parish of Ankum, County of Bersenbrück, Province of Hanover, on 15 October 1835. After his school years were behind him, he worked in the country with his father. Later, he also later worked on other farms and then rented a farm and worked at farming for himself. On 7 February 1861, Mr. Havermann married Katharina Löxterkamp [Loexterkamp, possibly also spelled Loxterkamp], an honest and virtuous young woman. Mr. Havermann worked at farming for 23 years in Germany, and the family immigrated to America in 1881. They settled quickly in Roselle Township, Carroll County, Iowa, where Mr. Havermann purchased a 120-acre farm quite close to Roselle. He and his family still live on this farm today, and the family is very respected by all their acquaintances due to their honest and good character. This happy marriage has produced eight children, one of whom died at a tender age. The names of the remaining children are: Margaretha, Hermann, Elisabeth, Anna, Heinrich, Wilhelmina, who is a nun in a convent, and Maria.
