Diedrick Borcherding was born in Hanover, Germany on Jan. 2, 1851. He came to America in 1860 and settled in Clayton, County, Iowa. He married Maria Backhaus, also of Clayton Co., on June 12, 1874. Seven children were born to this union, William, George, Herman, Amelia(Walters), Edward, Alvina (Staples) and a daughter Henrietta, who died in infancy. They moved to Carroll Co. in 1879 and settled on a farm northwest of Glidden. They sold their farm and moved to Lidderdale in 1911. Diedrick became involved in civic activities in Lidderdale. He served as mayor and on the town council. He died Nov. 9, 1921 at his home. Maria was a daughter of Casper and Hanna (Stranghover) Backhaus. She was born on Oct. 16, 1855. She continued to live in Lidderdale until 1933 when she moved to Omaha, Nebr., to be near her son William. She died on July 25, 1942 in Omaha. Both Diedrick & Maria were life long members of St. John American Lutheran Church. They are buried at Westlawn Cemetery, Glidden, Ia.
